CBC Monkstown Park Dublin: Our Memories of Europe

On the trip to Caltanissetta, Sicily:

"We did our project on three Irish dishes, a starter, main course and dessert. We chose fish cakes to start, then irish stew and finally - bread and butter pudding for dessert. To make this, the three of us met up with Ms. Morgan in the Home Economics room to teach us how to do it. We then wrote up a slide-show about the meal to show everyone in Sicily"

"We went to the Vatican. In the Vatican, we went to see the Sistine Chapel and St.
Peters Basilica, while there was a mass being said in Latin...afterwards we went to
the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Spanish Steps. We also went to see a Holocaust
museum in the 'Monumento a Vittorio Emmanuele II"

"It was a great trip; I met a lot of nice people, ate a lot of lovely food, and had a great time. I'd like to thank Mr. Keating and Mr. Farrell for coming with us, and I'd like to thank Mr. Fay for organising to bring us"
- David Smith

On our trip to Jihlava, Czech Republic:

"The currency was one of the first culture shocks with each of us carrying wads of thousands in our wallets!"

"In Prague, we saw a performance of Vivaldi's Four Seasons in the Gallery. We watched the recital in a beautiful hall adorned with marble busts of Czech composers....all fears that Jihlava wouldn't match up to our time in Prague were dispelled as our friendships with the other students flourished"

- Hugh Guidera

"They showed me my room and gave me everything I needed. I spent the night talking to Jakub and I showed him videos of hurling on Youtube and he showed me videos of floorball"

"In conclusion, it was a great week that will not be easily forgotten. I learned about new cultures and I made new friends from around Europe. Hopefully I will get to do something like this again and I would definitely recommend such a thing to anyone"

- Darragh Casey

"That night I ate a traditional Czech meal which was goulash - which consists of pork, rice, potatoes and sauce"

"Prague was an amazing, beautiful city. It was rich in history and culture. We went to a Vivaldi concert on Friday night and a Czech puppet show on Saturday night"

"Plenty of times I have hosted people from different countries but this was the
first time I was on the other end of it!"

"I feel that I now know so much more about Czech traditions, customs and history as I ever will and I also came away with a load of new friends who I feel I will keep for life"

On the trip to Krosno, Poland:

"Krakow is a very old city and the most stunning part of the city would be the castle or the market square in the centre of the city. Krakow is very beautiful at night as it glows with all the lights and lamps, glowing brightly in the dark throughout the city"

"The next day some of us went to the concentration camp - Auschwitz. I found that trip very tough as you go in expecting things and then your expectations are wrong as it's just so much worse!"

"We were treated to a wonderful show in a beautiful modern theatre. They had a typical Polish wedding in English which I thought was very enjoyable. Also, it had some Polishsinging and dancing which was very interesting to watch"

"We headed off to the ancient Salt Mines which was very exciting. When you get there and go into the building, you have to walk down 56 cases of stairs and when you reach the bottom you are 160 meters below the ground. It's so unique as everything is sculpted from salt!"

- Michael Noonan

"We then met our hosts. My host was a 17 year old girl, Justyna. She was very nice and had good english so we got on well from the start. Justyna lived in a very small village called Dukla, about 20minutes outside Krosno, with her sister, her parents, her grandparents and her cat, Texas...they were so welcoming to me. I truly felt lucky to have such a nice host family and to have made such a nice new friend"

"It was sad to say our goodbyes but we all traded emails and facebooks and I'm glad to say I'm still in touch with Justyna and some of her friends. It was really a great trip and such a nice country"

- Erich Steyaert

European Cookery Calendar

As a final work of our project, we decided to prepare a mix of sences concernig TOUCH - when we make it, SIGHT - when we eat it, it must look nice. SMELL - the food should smell nice and of course TASTE - the most important one. That is why we decide to focus on meals typical for each country and agreed on building a EUROPEAN COOKERY CALENDAR.

POLAND:
The Polish group in Sicily

On 1st March at about 6 p.m., after a 14-hour-journey by plane and bus we arrived in Caltanissetta in Sicily. Our host families welcomed us with open arms. We spent this day with the families getting used to new places and weather.

On the next day, we went to Istituto Tecnico Commerciale ‘Mario Rapisardi’, where we presented the prepared materials and visited the school. We met many classmates of our correspondents and got to know the differences between the Polish and the Italian educational systems.

On Wednesday we went on a day trip to the capital city of Sicily- Palermo. We visited the monastery and its garden with exotic vegetation, the Cathedral, famous local churches and just enjoyed the sea views. In the afternoon we had lots of time for our new friends and we spent great moments with them.

On Thursday we visited Cefalú- a fantastic town in the north of the island. We admired the coast of the Mediterranean Sea and went for a walk along the beach. We spent the time buying souvenirs, visiting local cafes and taking photos.

Friday was the day of our coming back to our homeland. Although we spent only a few days with our new friends, we felt we could stay in Sicily for ever.

For us a visit to Sicily was such a fantastic adventure. We had a chance to smell and taste real oranges, lemons and tangerines picked from the trees and taste traditional Italian dishes. We could see beautiful seaside, impressive monuments and feel warm weather (in Poland it was snowing at that time!) and real friendliness and friendship, which we will never forget.

We want to give special thanks to the fantastic people from the Comenius project, to our Italian friends and their families. Thank you for your hospitality, we hope we will meet again. Ciao!

P.S. It's a pity there is only one meeting left. See you in Jihlava soon!

How to make traditional Irish Lamb Stew

A Taste of Irish Cuisine

On the recent Comenius trip to Sicily CBC Monkstown students Eoghan Mooney, David Smith and Jake Kavanagh brought a taste of Irish food to the group meeting in Caltinasetta. Savoury delights such as Fish Cakes, Irish Stew and Irish Bread and Butter Pudding were presented as one of our main sources of tasty satisfaction and a large part of our staple diet!

Being an island, Ireland is famous for including fish one of the main parts of diet. Fishing is a national passtime, so no wonder we like to present fish cakes as a starter for a perfect dish. For a main course, traditional Irish stew is very welcome on every plate. Throughout our history, the Irish poeple have worked very hard and always look forward to a hearty meal. And to finish with desert, our sweet bread and butter pudding is the icing on the cake. No matter where in the world you come from, near or far, we implore you to try out our variety of great food in making the perfect Irish meal. For a start, have a quick look at the handy video and then head into your nearest kitchen to create a small piece of savoury heaven! Enjoy!

Sights of Ireland Video

Sights in Ireland

Ireland has many wonderful sights to be seen. Getting in touch with the senses, let us first turn to sight. Ireland, is a small island with a population of roughly 5.5million, with 3million alone living in the capital city of Dublin. When speaking of the sights, the first pictures that come to mind are the many shades of green throughout the land. With a wealth of mountains, lakelands and forest, let the senses be aroused whichever direction you travel. Most notable sight to see include The West and its hills of Connemara (above) the North and its rugged cliffs and amazing coastlines. The Giants Causeway (below) is a major attraction in Northern Ireland, geographically it was created through heating and cooling of hot molten lava. Mythically it is linked to a tale of a Scottish giant who fought an Irish giant on the crashing waves of the Irish coast - yes, Ireland is never short of stories! So depending on what you are interested in, Ireland has everything to offer - from nature trails to partying in the heart of Dublin. From joining in with the traditional dance and festivities to relaxing and enjoying the celtic culture. For more information on the sights and beauty of Ireland, go to our most visited travel and discovery website by using the following link: http://www.discoverireland.ie/Home.aspx Let the adventure begin!
